Formation Process of “SONGJOG” -A Network among Organizations Providing Treatment, Rehabilitationand other Related Services to Drug Addicts.
Addiction to different drugs is considered to be a complicated chronic relapsing brain disease, which may,as a normal course occur or repeat a number of times. In other words, a man after receiving adequate and proper treatment may beexposed to take drugs again and falls to be addicted. But if a proper treatment is extended to an addictensuring intensive after-treatment care and regular personal monitoring, he may have a chance to start a new and meaningful life afterward and stay away from drugs. To address physical and other consequences of a drug addict, a number of treatments are now availableand being followed in manycountries.
In order to transform a drug addict totally and to bring him into a full life, there needs an integrated and long term treatment.A person long depending on drugs naturally damages his physical, mental and emotional characters and these together affects his behavior pattern and values. To address this complicated human issues, there needs a drastic change in his thought process and whole way of looking at life and things around. He needs to regain moral strength to cope with adverse life and social issues around and that independently,by using his common and moral senses and by engaging best judgement.
There lies somevisible limitations into presently functioning Drug Treatment and Rehabilitation centers around Bangladesh and reasons could be many. To identify and contain those limitations and to ensure rights of proper treatment and rehabilitation of the drug addicts, there was a meeting called at Dhaka Ahsania Mission Office, 10/2 Iqbal Road, Mohammadpur, Dhaka 1207, on 28th April 2014 followed by yet another meeting on 4 May of the same year.
In those two meetings, a common understanding was reached that a nationwide network be established among organizations involved into Drug Treatment and Rehabilitation Services in Bangladesh. To advance this process further, under the chairmanship of Dr. Peter Halder, Country Director of Bangladesh Youth First Concerns a meeting was held on 30 June 2014 where a good number of members of AMIC(check this word) were present.
The meeting agreed to have a network established among organizations actively involved into Drug Treatment and RehabilitationsProgram and an Ad-hoc committee was formed in that line with specific responsibility to frame a constitution of this network within a specified time. As the draftconstitutionwas framed, a general meeting was then called inviting all members and meeting had a threadbare discussions on the draft constitution andrecommended to have a full committee be formed through election.
Members of the Ad-hoc committee were – (1) Dr. Peter Halder- Convener (2) Mr. IqbalMasud (3) Mr. TarunKantiGayenand this committee in a number of meetings afterwards finalized the constitution be placed before the members.
The representatives of DrugTreatment and RehabilitationCenters who were present on the 30th June 2014 meeting on constitution of national network “SONGJOG” were – Amar Home, Hope of Life, Society for Social Peaceful Life, Recovery Foundation, Asroy, Patheo- The Centre for Rehabilitation of Drug Addiction, Utsho, Baraca, Sobar Life, Asroy-Neer, Ferar Life, Pragoti, Fera, Relation, Kriya, U-turn, Holy Care, BangladeshYouth First Concerns, Prosanti, Jamuna, Green Life, ChayaNeer, Proyash-Drug Addiction Treatment and Rehabilitation, DEEP- Rehabilitation Centre and Dhaka Ahsania Mission. These organizations are considered Founding Members of “SONGJOG.
Formal Functioning of “ SONGJOG”
A meeting was later called inviting all organizations involved into Drug Treatmentand Rehabilitation Program in Bangladesh assembled under the network “ SONGJOG” on 30 April 2015. And the constitution of “SONGJOG” was adapted and resolved that a full committee be elected following the provisions of the newly adopted constitution.
A meeting then was called at Dhaka Ahsania Mission head office to make an official “GO-FORWARD” of “SONGJOG” and representatives from 32 organizations attended. A 13 member Executive Committee was formed with Dr. Peter Halder (Bangladesh Youth First Concerns as President, Mr. D K Nasir (Fera-Dhaka) and Mr. Parvej Ahmed (ARK-Chittagong) as Vice President, Mr.Iqbal Masud (Dhaka Ahsania Mission) as Secretary, Md. Mostafizur Rahman (Holy Care-Barisal) as Joint Secretary, Mr. ImamulIslam Roni (Sabar Life-Dhaka) as Treasurer, Mr. Shamim (Asroy-Dhaka) as Organizing Secretary, Mr. Mostafizur Rahman (IRA-Bogura) as Publicity and Publication Secretary. And members elected were – Mr. TarunKantiGayen (Kriya-Dhaka), Mr. AbulBaharPoltu (Aposh-Rajshahi), Ms. AfrozaAktarMonju (KMSS-Khulna), Mr. DidarulAlamRashed (Nongor-Coxsbazar) and Mr. Mahbub-E-Khoda (Relation – Jamalpur).
At the end of this general meeting Director of Central Drug Treatment Centre and Chief Consultant of Drug Control Directorate of Bangladesh Government Dr. Syed Emamul Hossain and Residential Psychiatrics Dr. AkhtaruzzamanSelim attended this meeting and welcomed the newly formed EC of SONGJOG.
Formation of Executive Committee on 18 December on 2019
For the year 2020-21, a 21 member Executive Committee of SONGJOG – a network of Drug Treatment and Rehabilitation Center was formed with the following members. President – Mr. Iqbal Masud,Director of Ahsania Mission Heath Sector,Secretary – Mr. Sahabuddin Chowdhury – Director Utsho and Organizing Secretary – Mr. Rasheduzzaman Roni. In the Annual General Meeting of SONGJOG took place only yesterday at Time Square Restaurant,Lalmatia, Dhaka,this committee was formed. Other members of SONGJOG EC are,Vice Presidents- Mr. Lutfor Rahman Manik, Mr. Shafiqur Rahman Khokon and Mr. Md. Fayej Ahmed. Joint Secretary – Md. AsrafulHaqueTuhin, and Md. Monir Hossain. Treasurer – Md. KamruzzamanShahin, Publicity and Publication Secretary – Mr. Tanvir Ahmed Pappu, Assistant Publicity and Publication Secretary Ms. FirozNajneenBadhon. Members of EC committee are –Md. Shameem Khan, Mr. Mustafizur Rahman Sumon, Mr. Ehabub-E-Khuda (Moni), Md. Badol, Mr. Michael, Mr. Masum, Mr. Abdul Hamid Babu, Mr. ArifMahbubRumon.
Dr. Peter Halder, Mr. D ANasir, Mr. TarunKantiGayen and Mr. Nazrul Islam who served into the immediate past EC committee as President, Vice President andEC members were included as Advisors.
To advance and ensurequalitative treatment, rehabilitation and other services those deserved by the drug addicts to the organizations rendering services into this sector,on 30 April 2015, an organizations was set by establishing a network under “SONGJOG”. Licensed under the Drug Control Directorate of Bangladesh Government, now a total 70 organizations have assembles and registered as active member of “SONGJOG”.
The outgoing President Dr. Peter Halder on behalf of the just dissolved Executive Committee welcomed the newly elected members of wished them all the best.
